Attempting to be fearless in the face of terror
Nothing changes if nothing changes-- especially us.
Welcome to The Pivot. Part journal, part newsletter — where I share what I'm living, learning and questions that I need to ask myself to keep moving forward. It's for those who are feeling the call to make a move, to shift. It's a reminder that we don't have to jump off a cliff — we just need to turn our bodies slightly and start the tiniest pivot. And still, those small movements can be the hardest ones to make.
So I figure I would share my journey so we can do it together. And, if I didn’t mention it before, I'm really glad you're here.
Good morning.
This is not ok. We are not ok. We are being made to believe that we should be able to continue our lives as usual amid chaos, suffering and violence. And when we adhere to this, we slowly die. We become walking & breathing ghosts of who we know we are and strive to be.
These times are not normal - racially-profiled kidnappings, family separation, human rights violations, war, mass killing, man-made famine, overt racism, discriminatory orders persecuting Black & brown people, women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, destruction of humanitarian aid organizations, attacks on environmental justice, criminalization of protest, governmental defunding of critical programs that ensure milions of children & families can access healthcare and food. This is inhumane.
And nothing changes if nothing changes-- especially us.
Our overwhelm, outrage and helplessness from witnessing all of this are human. The idea that we should do our work, raise our children and live our lives as if none of this is happening is not. It is when we start to hardly register these atrocities, that we slowly start to become less human.
