Black Girl Healing is a reader-supported publication. I appreciate you for being here to read and support my work as a writer. This newsletter requires much time and thought, so it is greatly appreciated when you subscribe.
when she first noticed
that glimpse of light
she hoped it would finally be
the beginning of the end
where she could finally rest
weary legs
and
a wandering mind
but instead
that was the moment
she realized the journey
is what made her
ready for the destination,
a place that both
blinds and reveals,
so she could discover
who she had to be
to become who she is
creating, living, loving,
bringing worlds together
was her work
dissolving differences
binding chasms tightly
to each other
building
spaces
worlds
connections
that can never be broken
her power
she normalized
and negated
but we recognized
her as diety
that she was the lighthouse
setting aflame
the darkness that
we thought
could never be
lit
relentless
in giving life
to those many left
for dead
Now we know that
the shadows that terrorized us
were never ours
she pulled us
to safety
our evolution
a reminder of how
she served as our light,
how she couldn't help
but crawl closer,
hoping to get us
to remember
the sweetness
of self
and taste
she knew who we
were
are
will be
now we are
her seed
planted and reaped
she is the seer
that manifested
what she sowed
despite
our efforts to
escape
she could
never refuse
the chance
to show us
how we
shine
now look at us
who would have known
(she knew)
that we were created
(she did)
to be
each other’s oxygen
and
she, woman,
will never
stop being
our sun
