Uncovering Our Light
"Pain is important: how we evade it, how we succumb to it, how we deal with it, how we transcend it." - Audre Lorde
Black Girl Healing is a reader-supported publication. I appreciate you for being here to read and support my work as a writer. This newsletter requires much time and thought, so it is greatly appreciated when you subscribe.
What if I told you
I was the night sky
this mirror for women
bathed in Black skin
watching the world through
white moon eyes
clothed in
a flowing boubou
studded with fluorescent stars
we with haughty mood
and dusky voice
saying to the world,
“I will stay here,
and will no longer be your
creator
protector
future”
Would you believe me?
What happens when
the whole world remains
silent
and you are forced to
find the truth
that has been covered,
finally realizing,
nothing more magnificent
than a woman who
is unafraid to reveal her light
has ever existed.
knowing she
was never created
to be simple,
silent or
subjugated
Would you speak this truth?
Terrified
to face us
Aware that we will
pierce their soul
unable to shun
or invisibilize us
they bear witness
to our being
eyes watching how God
shaped Her comfort
and delight
in different shades
of Black and brown
womanness
Do you see it?
Unable to resist
how we envelop
we are each other’s balm
calming ourselves
through the many storms
that sprouted as love
grew as tears
lived as angry regret
but bloomed
into quiet wisdom
She remains a saving grace,
but tumultuous
a mighty river,
that can be sound and still
yet rough and unforgiving
if provoked
washing us clean,
exposing our wounds,
through her own
so we all can
be seen
known
and healed
We feel the sting
of ancient memories
that call us together,
pleading with our humanity
to rescue us
from the imaginary story
of living a quiet life
resisting our urge
to live
in the rooted courage
passed down from our mothers
shared by our sisters
upheld by our friends
Wishing for rest
but constantly manifesting restlessness
Having to wrestle
to find our peace
in a distracted world,
who will never see
her glorious power
that has never sought
to dominate
or destroy
or divide
or decide
or deny
but only to declare
what we need
and
for once receive
instead of give.
She resists
Unable to choose humility
For she is a holy human,
and that is what is feared,
so she is targeted
yet cannot be broken,
and will not believe
a country can save us
but knows our community will
Revelations of connection
with each step we take
So here we are
floating in the universe
reflected in the onyx night
both significant
and anonymous
always regal,
never fully understood
walking the continuum of
glorious to unimaginably precious
She is immense
in the light
And you can catch
a glimpse of
her shadow
in the night darkness.
Visions of what we've lived
and survived
unfettered,
fully revived
together,
all of us,
innumerable.
unimaginable,
inescapable.
become the light
that you must follow
to truly see

I feel what you wrote in my body and even my aura. I’m on a journey of allowing and remembering. A big part of it is trying to see from my mother’s eyes. She was a poet. She has dementia along with her sister. I believe that they got it early from restlessness in this world.
As usual, you make me ponder, wish, and dream.
